Now, keeping the temperature in that range might not work for all of the scenarios. For example, if there is too much moisture in the room, the gun will still bleed slightly. As you might know by now that two of the arrogant nemesis of grease are heat and water. These two accelerate the oxidations, resulting in the tool leaking.
For that reason, even when the temperature is around 70 degrees, the gun might still leak or bleed if the moisture percentage is too high in the room. So, you need to limit the moisture content of the area that you plan to store the tool in. Dehumidifiers will work like a charm in this case.
Why Do Grease Guns Leak?
As we have mentioned, most of the manufacturers will recommend keeping the tool in a room-temperature area. But that can still make the gun leak. Now, you might be wondering whether the manufacturers are intentionally suggesting the wrong method or if you are missing out on anything.
Well, the matter is not that simple. And to know about the issue in-depth, you need to understand a couple of factors.
Heat and Moisture
A grease gun is basically a sponge. As you know, a sponge will release water when you squeeze it. The tool has mechanics that stress or squeezes the grease out during the operational mode. When the machine stresses the grease, it releases the base oils from the thickener system, just like a sponge.
So, what are we trying to state here? Well, the stresses that the grease encounters can still happen when the machine is not operational. It can occur due to heat and moisture. And when the grease experiences this stress, it will release the base oils, making the gun leak.
Reversibility of The Grease
The reversibility is basically the ability of the grease to recapture to base oils. This factor plays a significant role in terms of making the grease return to its original consistency. Some greases have higher reversibility, and some have lower reversibility.
These are the factors that will depend on the end-user, not the manufacturer. The manufacturer has no idea regarding the grease you are using. Due to that, most manufacturers will offer a general guideline. That is to store the gun in room-temperature conditions.
